The Scholastic Action Shooting College Nationals

The Scholastic Action Shooting College Nationals

The SASP - Scholastic Action Shooting Program - brings the top College teams together at the Talladega Marksmanship Park to settle the question, which team is the best in the nation. And a regional event also brings in younger competitors from High School and Junior High Teams. Plus, Turkey Hunters take over Nashville for the 75th NWTF annual convention and new product show. And John’s got a project to accurize an inexpensive double stack pistol with a new Schuemann Z barrel to close-up the groups.

Scholastic Action Shooting College Nationals

42-02-1The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, they’re the organization that offers the SCTP, or Scholastic Clay Target Program, for middle school and high-school age shotgun shooters. They also offer the Scholastic Action Shooting Program, or SASP. It’s a action shooting sport that draws a lot from Steel Challenge and this year the Collegiate Nationals are bigger than ever. The action bays at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park are the place for college and high school shooting teams from around the country to compete.

42-02-2This is a special year for the Scholastic Action Shooting Program, as they re-name their centerfire National Championship Trophy to honor one of their original industry partners, as they also create a new Rimfire Pistol National Championship Trophy to honor another partner who has been involved from the start.

History’s Guns - HG22 Two Groove Rifle

42-02-8During the age of slow-burning black-powder rifles, one of the great balancing acts involved using large powder loads to increase both velocity and muzzle energy, and do that it without damaging the barrel. Old world gun makers had many solutions in the period before breech loading rifles. One European approach was the two-groove rifle, that’s now one of History’s Guns.

75th NWTF Annual Convention

42-02-6More people in the convention hall and more birds in the field. That’s how the sport of wild turkey hunting is going this year. Bird populations are up, and the National Wild Turkey Federation’s annual convention is their biggest event yet, as thousands of hunters gather at The Opryland Convention Center in Nashville to see the newest guns and gear. Those thousands of hunters from across the country have converged to see the newest products to make sure they have a successful hunting season.  And it’s the Federation’s largest gathering ever, with more than 67-thousand hunters, dealers, and families attending. With over 500 booths and products on display, the NWTF convention is both a new product show and a celebration of the success of 75 years of conservation.

Products: Schuemann Z Barrel Swap

42-02-3We’re starting with the Rock Island Armory Tac-Ultra double stack 1911 in nine-millimeter. It’s got a full-length dust cover, under barrel rail fiber optic front sight. Skeletonized trigger and hammer, adjustable rear sight, G 10 scales, the fact that it’s a double stack 1911 for 900 bucks is astounding, but like all things you get what you pay for right?

42-02-4

So, what will it take to make this bargain double stack 1911 shoot like one of those custom double stacks 1911s that might have a price point three times higher? It’s going to take gunsmithing and Al Zitta and his Schuemann Z Barrels. And initial impressions of the Tac Ultra are positive.
