The Precision Rifle Series 22 Finale

The Precision Rifle Series 22 Finale

This time, it’s Precision Rifle Competition, but with twenty-twos. It’s the PRS Rim-fire Finale, the competition that opens up Precision Shooting to more competitors without the cost of centerfire and without the need for a thousand-yard range. Plus, the story of the US Army’s iconic M-60 machine gun that is now one of History’s Guns. Then it’s the test of fitness and marksmanship under physical duress at the Tactical Games National Championship.

PRS Rimfire Finale

41-01-1Precision Rifle Competition has a number of different barriers to entry -- cost of ammo and rifles, and the limited number of long-range shooting venues. Even so, it is easily one of the fastest growing competitive shooting disciplines today. But what if there was a version of the sport that didn’t require massive ranges with distances out to 1,000 yards or more? And what if that same version of the sport eliminated the center fire ammo and resulting felt recoil? We’re talking about PRS Rimfire. And in the first year of the series the finale has drawn almost 150 competitors from around the country to College Station, Texas.

41-01-2The Triple C Shooting Facility is the host venue for the first annual PRS Rimfire Finale, and Co-Match director Prentice Wink is very familiar with this facility as his home range. That serves as an advantage when laying out the 20 unique courses of fire that make up this match. There are the standard props you’d expect to see at any Precision Rifle match -- Tractor tires, Wire spools, Concrete culverts. Even cross tie bunkers. But it’s not so much the props as it is the target placement that sets this match apart. Many of these stages have cross course target lay-outs. It’s a way to use the wind to add to the challenge.

History’s Guns - M-60

41-01-3History will always record the M-16 as a symbol of the fighting American man in the Jungles of Viet Nam.  But there is another American made firearm whose impact on that conflict was just as significant. The M-60 is now one of history’s guns.

Tactical Games National

41-01-5When it comes to the shooting sports, if you’re looking for something new, you’ll likely find it. Well, what about a sport that tests your rifle and pistol skills and at the same time your strength and stamina. Well, that is the Tactical Games, born form Military stress training, and attracting competitors from all walks of life. Revelry Peak Ranch is the battlefield for more than 140 competitors, who want to test more than just speed and accuracy in the Tactical Games National Championship.

41-01-6The Tactical Games National Championship is spread out over three days, primarily so the athletes will have the time to recover from the physical demands of the battles. And in the Elite Division the physical demand is very impressive. Early in the three days of this National Championship, the competitors encounter the battle known as shoot and scoot. It begins with rifle shots on steel targets among the range cars. Followed by pistol on the same targets from the shooting area. Then it’s a cross-country run with their kit, roughly three miles to the final physical test of this battle, the obstacle course.

Colt Python 3 Inch in .357

41-01-7News from Colt this year is the latest release in their series of iconic snake guns. The Python three-inch, double action, .357. All of the internal redesign that was present in the initial re-release of the Python is present here and that means double action trigger pull just over nine pounds, and in single action, just over five pounds.  Internal ramping gives you a far less heavy trigger feel. But speaking of heavy, that’s the overall unloaded weight. The Python is all steel, two pounds six ounces of it to be exact. Worth considering if you’re thinking of carrying the Python three inch. One benefit to that weight, it will help to reduce the felt recoil of the .357 magnum cartridges. With a three-inch barrel though, you can expect a significant muzzle flash. The Colt Python Three Inch has a retail price just under $1,500.

Impossible Shots - Taran’s Six Plates

41-01-8Taran Butler shows us how to shoot multiple targets at elapsed times under two seconds. Last time there were 12-inch plates at 10 yards, from the hip with a 2011. It was pretty awesome. Since then, he’s done it faster with a Glock, but this time he’s going to try it with an MPX carbine to move into the category of Impossible.
