Sighting In with Shooting USA – Gene Lumsden & Legacy Sports International
We’re profiling one of the all time greats in Trap Shooting. Forty years ago Gene Lumsden was the best in the game, but he walked away from the sport to found Legacy Sports International, using his knowledge of shooting to find and import the best guns and gear for today’s shooters.
Reno, Nevada is the home of Legacy Sports International, a firearms importing company, bringing in guns and gear from around the world. But what you don’t know is Legacy’s founder is one of the most decorated trap shooters of all time. Gene was born in Southern California and seemed destined for shooting greatness at a young age. After only one round of trap, people noticed the then 12 year old boy’s talents.
Gene would go on to win both junior titles and adult titles at the Grand American and then in International Trap Shooting as a member of what was then called, the Army Shooting Team.
But in 1971, he gave up the sport, stored his Krieghoff away, and began a new career in firearms importing. He had not shot trap in nearly 40 years, before he agreed to shoot with us during our visit to Reno. He had always been afraid that a taste of the competition he once dominated would pull him back into sport. Gene says, that walking away from professional trap competition was the toughest decision he ever made.
His expertise in choosing and designing rifles, shotguns, airguns and optics now benefit today’s shooters who have access to Legacy Sports International’s wide collection of products. Each one personally selected and approved by one of the all time greats—Gene Lumsden.
