Julie Golob Shooting the Mover

JULIE2021-8-MOVER-1
Moving targets are one of the most challenging targets for any shooter and especially at the Bianchi Cup where the moving target often determines who wins the match.

But I have a drill, an action pistol short course non-moving target event, that will help you get ready to shoot the Mover.

For the moving target event you have an opening of 60 feet that the target moves across the range. You only have six seconds of exposure and it’s trucking along pretty good.

For this Pro Tip, we’ve set up six targets, with three feet in between each target, to simulate the motion of the moving target.

Now you're never going to be able to hit it as soon as it comes out and hopefully you finish shooting before it disappears. So, this is a very good representation of what it would look like and a good goal to reach for.

Here we are at the 10 yard line. I have my six targets laid out in front of me. I want to shoot from right to left for this first string and we have six seconds. So, one shot per target in six seconds. Pretty simple.

You can start at the low ready if you're not comfortable with the draw, but if you are, your start position will be wrists above shoulders.

As tempting as it may be to shoot fast and drive the gun in these transitions, you really want to focus on being smooth. So, let the recoil drift you over to each center of the target, from right to left or left to right. Just focus on smooth motion and letting the sights settle before you squeeze.

Now we are going to move back to the 15-yard line and, unlike all of the action pistol short course stages, when you move back a distance, you get a little bit more time. But not so here.

We just have the same six seconds at 15 feet. With the targets pushed back, it is much more challenging.

As with the 10-yard line, we will begin with shooting right to left and the good news is from this distance the targets the span across, your swing to them decreases, so you're sweeping across and it doesn’t seem to be as great a movement, which is a good thing because the time limit is the same.

Sweeping Left to right just focus on letting that sight travel, sweeping through nice and smooth and you’ll hit the center.

So there you have it, the non-moving target, moving target version of the action pistol short course it’s such a great drill to help you get ready to shoot a mover.

When you do you’ll need to learn your lead points, based on your ammunition and caliber, as well as practicing continuous motion as you move across the bay with the target moving as well.

Go ahead and give this a try. Let us know how it goes and until next time be safe and have fun.
