Julie Golob – Carry Gun Practice

Julie2017-1-1
The two most important skills to practice when you're shooting your carry gun are speed and accuracy. Little guns have a shorter sight radius and that can make it more challenging to shoot them accurately at speed.

One of the best ways to improve your accuracy is by shooting groups. So, you want to set up a realistic target and really focus on getting a good sight picture and that trigger control.

Keep in mind this is slow-fire so you don't want to shoot too quickly. You just want to shoot as fast as you can see the sights on the targets.

Keep your trigger finger moving straight back toward your nose.

Here's a little trick for shooting tight groups. Take a good first shot then use that bullet hole as your next aiming point. Don't worry about whether or not your next few rounds end up in the same hole. Just focus on good fundamentals.

If all of your shots are piled up, you're doing great. If your aiming hole isn't lined up with the rest of your shots, you may need to adjust your sights.

Repeat the drill as necessary to improve your accuracy.

Now, let's talk about speed - specifically how fast you can see your sights on the target. The great way to do this is with a drill called the Press Out Drill.

You're going to face down range, point the gun down range, and keep it at chest level.

Keep your eyes on target and extend the gun to your line of sight.

Julie2017-1-16You should notice your front sight come onto the target first, and then your rear sight will come up into view. As soon as they line up on the target, squeeze the trigger.

The trick to shooting quickly is getting on the trigger as soon as you have an acceptable site picture. It may seem slow but the more you practice the faster you will get.

You can practice this drill with one shot, and then transition to shooting controlled pairs. That's where you shoot two shots as quickly as you see the sights recover. Keep in mind your shots are likely not going to group as tightly as they are when you're shooting for accuracy.

Now, which is more important when you're shooting your carry gun, speed or accuracy? Well they both are. You need to be confident with both skills to be the best shooter that you can be. You may be better at one skill over the other, but just remember don't neglect the one you need to improve, so you can shoot your best.
