Julie Golob – Going to the Range

Julie2016-6-1
Even though shooting is my job, as a busy mom I need to make the most of my range time. I’m going to share with you some of my tips for how be safe and productive for your next practice session.

The first thing is to have a plan. To make sure I don’t forget anything, I’ll need to make a list of guns, gear, targets, trauma kit and other supplies.

Next, I need to make sure I schedule my session appropriately. I check the weather, make sure the range is open and available, and research any traffic issues or other potential conflicts.

Once I have picked a date and time, I let a family member know when I plan to be at the range as an extra safety precaution. I like to shoot when the range isn’t busy so that often means I am the only one there.  Letting someone know when and where I will be is an added safety measure. I’ll also set up a reminder in my phone to let that person know when I am at home.

When I arrive, regardless of whether I am shooting indoors or outside, I make sure I back in, car nose out to make it easier should I need to leave in a hurry.

I also make sure I keep my keys accessible and on me while I am shooting.
I always keep my phone on me. Not only is it a great tool to taking photos of targets, making notes and logging rounds down range; it’s also a valuable tool to call for help should you need it.

Now, range time is sacred and distractions are unwelcome, so I set my phone to “Do Not Disturb” so that I don’t get unwanted calls or messages while I am trying to shoot.

Once I have completed a range session, I make sure to clean up my targets, pick up brass and leave the range in good condition so others can enjoy it, too.

Maximize your range session by having a plan and being prepared. It’s the best way to train so you can always be safe and have fun.
