Caliber and Gun Choices

We are going to cover some major points in helping you select the firearm that is best for you based on size and caliber.

There are a few important things to remember when selecting a caliber to shoot. The first is whether the firearm is rim-fire or center fire. Rim-fire handguns like this 22-caliber model 41 generally have a softer kick and are easier to shoot.

When fired, the firing pin moves forward striking the rim of the case, hence the name rim-fire. Rim-fire guns like the twenty-two can be inexpensive options for those who like to shoot many rounds.

38 special, nine-millimeter, forty Smith and Wesson and 45 ACP are very common center-fire calibers. With the center fire guns, the firing pin strikes the center of the case where the primer is located. Center-fire loads generally produce more of a kick and the cases can be reloaded to use again.

The basic rule to remember here is that generally the larger the caliber the stronger the recoil. This twenty-two caliber will have significantly less recoil than this massive Smith and Wesson 500 Magnum.

If you are shooting for the first time or just want to improve on your fundamentals I like to suggest starting with a small caliber like the twenty two. You can learn to shoot better with inexpensive ammunition and move up in caliber when you become more comfortable.

Size is also an important factor when selecting a firearm to shoot. This handgun is much lighter and will kick a lot more than this heavier model in the same caliber, which can absorb a lot more recoil.

This Smith and Wesson Titanium revolver is light weight. It’s designed for everyday carry, but it will kick harder with the same ammunition than its steel framed cousin the Smith and Wesson model 686.

You should also keep in mind how the gun fits in your hand. You should ask yourself these questions, can you get a good firm handshake on the gun? Can you also reach the trigger with ease? One of the great features about the M and P pistol is that you have three different grip sizes, small, medium and large to select one for you.

Also ask if you can manipulate the slide easily and remember to make sure that you can activate and deactivate any safeties. Keep in mind size and caliber when you make your next firearms purchase and always remember that it is important that you are comfortable with what you choose to shoot.
