Surprise Targets and Focus Targets

COLT32-Surprise-1
I just did a simple drill that has a lot of elements in it. I went form a strong-hand only close surprise target, transitioning to another target and transitioning to a freestyle grip.

COLT32-Surprise-2

It seems simple but there’s a few elements you have to understand. When I shoot the first target strong-hand, I don’t want to just drive the gun strong-hand only and then play catch up with my support hand.

What I want to do is come off of the first target, bring the gun back to my workspace, which is actually part of my draw, get my two-hand grip, punch out to the far target. That way, I can make two accurate quick shots.

I am going to run the drill again and I am going to run it at about twenty five percent speed so you can see the elements. Remember all training is built on foundation blocks, so we start off twenty five percent, get it down, we build up speed and build up speed until we get to the point where we can do it at full speed. So take a look at what I am doing and watch how I do it at each position.

This time I am going to pick up the pace doing the drill, this close target the best way for me to explain it, it’s more of a loose sight picture, its close proximity, I can get my pistol out. Trigger the two rounds, get good hits, but that far target I have to have a lot of respect, in order to get two good solid hits. When I am doing this drill if you listen you’ll hear a difference in the cadence, the speed between these shots and the far target because of the respect I have to give that distance target.

COLT32-Surprise-7

Lets take a look at the targets, you can see this near target, nice and tight center hits, and the far target, nice center hits, the key to this drill is to make sure that you’re smooth, you bring the gun back to your work space and drive out. You want to be able to identify a loose sight picture target that’s pretty close, and then a more precision sight picture on the far target, the far target commands a lot more respect, so take this drill to the range. Go out, bring a friend and try it
