Pro Tip: 9 Shot Drill

Colt28-9Shot-1
I’ve just shot my nine-round drill.

Colt28-9Shot-2
This drill is very simple, but it incorporates a lot of technique that any competition shooter and anybody that carries concealed should train and accomplish.

We start out with a draw on the weak side of a barricade, and I shoot two rounds to the lower A zone, one to the upper A zone.

I’m at slide lock, I reload coming across the barricade, and I shoot three rounds into the lower A zone on the second target.

I then do a speed reload on the way back to the other side of the barricade.

Then shoot upper box, lower box, upper box.

So, what I am doing is two different reloads, a draw, and transitions from a big target to a small target. These are techniques that everybody should train with to become a better shooter.

Let’s talk about the key elements of this drill.

Colt28-9Shot-8
I am going to load my first magazine with three rounds. This will force me to do a slide lock reload after the first target engagement.

But the real meat and potatoes of this drill is in the third and final position, because I am coming from the right side to the left side. I have to make a precision shot on the first target, then transition over to another target that is further to the right, my foot position has to be where my left foot is forward of my right. This allows me to come out in a well-balanced position.

Bending my knee, I can take another shot at the next target in a well-balanced position and come right back to the first target again for the last shot.

So, let’s see it again in real time.

Colt28-9Shot-12
Wow these are two good looking targets! Both of them have all of the hits in the scoring zone just like I want.

The reason that this is a nine-shot drill, not only is it great for pistol shooters, but it’s also revolver friendly.

I use a timer when I train. This last run was 8.86. But you don’t need a timer, in order to perform this drill.

Let your accuracy dictate the speed. As you get better your speed will increase.

Next time I see you at the range let me know how you did on the nine shot drill.
